Waldorf Toymaking

I’ve been on a tiny toymaking kick lately! In the recent weeks I’ve made the little bend dolls and felt animals above. Its so satisfying to be able to finish a project in a day, and despite what you’d think – they’re not that hard. If you’re interested in trying your hand at some felt toymaking, needle felting, or Waldorf doll making why not join our Waldorf toymaking workshop? All levels are welcome and you can find the complete rundown of dates etc on our workshops page.

Felt Christmas decorations from Pashom

I always feel funny looking at Christmas things before December – growing up, we always had a real, live cut Christmas tree, and we had to wait until mid December after my dad’s birthday before we could put it up. The wait was excruciating! Especially because growing up in Adelaide, the Christmas Pageant was always in the earlier half of November, and a lot of my school friends were allowed to put up their synthetic Christmas trees on that day. Never mind that a real Christmas tree would never survive a month in a hot Adelaide December – in my mind it was hugely unfair! Yet now, as an adult, i’m reluctant to get Christmas going too soon. I like to wait at least until december before our tinsel tree goes up – but that doesn’t stop me from keeping an eye out for cute seasonal items and shopping a little earlier! I am carrying on a family tradition of buying a new ornament each year, and this year, I’ll be choosing one of these gorgeous felt decorations from Pashom.

Pashom’s gorgeous range are made exclusively by a women’s co-operative in Kathmandu that employs over 80 women full-time and provides them with vocational skills enabling them to support their families. They are incredibly skilled in the art of felting, which is an intricate process of lathering wool and hot soapy water together and through moisture, heat and friction a unique and beautiful product is created. The wool is imported from New Zealand and is hand-dyed in Nepal using ecologically approved dyes. As there is little local demand for felt, this co-operative and its employees rely solely upon export for their livelihoods, so we are delighted to be able to contribute to their sustainability.

Felt mermaids in shells so precious and tiny you can’t help but gasp, wise gnomes with faces full of character, tiny flower babies – these are the fine handwork of Fruits of Heart.

These tiny wonders charm everyone who sees them, and they are the perfect size for little people to tote everywhere in their pockets. I used to love having a little pocket friend with me when i was young, ready for any kind of imaginative adventure… in the garden, at a restaurant, or even in the line at the post office!

Each piece is lovingly handmade, from hand painted pure wool felt. Pop in and meet the whole colorful crowd – but with cuteness like this I don’t think they’ll be with us for long!

Felted Treasures from Pashom

house bag

Pashom is a Fair Trade focussed business based in Sydney, Australia and is owned and operated by Fiona Chadwick and Scott Goddard. It was established in 2002 whilst Fiona was living and working as a volunteer teacher in Pokhara, Nepal. Apart from forming a close affinity with the country and its people, she was captivated by the beauty and quality of the products made by local cottage industries – especially the Fair Trade and ethical/sustainable businesses run by some very industrious and inspiring Nepalese women.

Aren’t these felt backpacks adorable?! They have pockets along the front that hold finger puppet toys, so your little one always has something to keep amused with!

These felt bags are as sturdy as they are cute, so they will hold up to all the play they inspire!

Pashom’s gorgeous range are made exclusively by a women’s co-operative in Kathmandu that employs over 80 women full-time and provides them with vocational skills enabling them to support their families. Little purses and pouches make great gifts for toddlers – working the zips is good for fine motor skills and isn’t it fun to find treasure in little zipped pouches?
